CLAMPON Plastic Pipe Couplers

CLAMPON’s plastic pipe couplings serve as a self-locking pipe joint system for all HDPE and PVC piping with a common outside diameter. The system consists of a rubber seal with a metal clamp covering the seal and gripping onto the pipe, and is pressure tested to 30 bar.

Simply CLAMPON

We have specifically designed our pipe couplings to eliminate the usage of expensive welding equipment that is time consuming. You are now able to fully utilise HDPE and PVC piping without having to weld. Simply, CLAMPON.

CLAMPON couplings are available in sizes 63mm - 315mm, and can be Epoxy Coated or painted on request.

Coupler Fitting Instructions

Please be sure to follow the instructions below when fitting your CLAMPON pipe couplings. Make sure to check that the pipe size corresponds with the size stamped on the inside of the TP Coupler.

VERY IMPORTANT: The couplers were only tested on SABS approved piping. Ensure that the pipe size corresponds with the coupler size. The outside diameter of the pipe must be within the parameters specified as per SABS ISO 4427.

clampon product installationStep 1:
Cut the pipe ends square and chamfer the leading edges of the pipe ends. The pipe ends must be free of any damage such as longitudinal gouges etc.

Step 2:
Insert both pipe ends into the rubber seal ensuring that the pipe ends are tight against the stopper inside the seal.

Step 3:
Be certain that the pipes to be connected are lined up properly. Failure to do so may result in damage being caused to the rubber seal.

Step 4:
Fit the two metal parts over the rubber seal, and joined pipe ends.
Note: Care must be taken that the seal fits properly into the two metal parts.

Step 5:
Tighten the bolts down until the gaps on both sides are closed evenly.
IMPORTANT: When bolting the two halves over the pipes and seal, it is IMPERATIVE that the bolts be tightened in such a way that the gaps on both sides close evenly. Failure to do so may result in the bolt tip flange breaking off. The bolts must be tightened down hard to ensure that the grip rings are firmly lodged onto the pipes.

Step 6:
Ensure that the metal halves are clear of any foreign matter prior to installation.

Step 7:
Should lubrication be used to fit the seal over the pipe ends, care must be taken not to use lubricants containing petro chemicals.

Coupling Methods on Synthetic Piping

The introduction of plastic piping has constantly evoked a search for more efficient and less costly coupling or joining methods, and CLAMPON is able to provide such a solution. Here are some interesting facts about coupling methods on synthetic piping. Should you require information regarding the CLAMPON pipe couplings, please contact us.

HDPE plain ended piping can only be connected with compression fittings up to a size of 110mm. A number of companies are now importing these fittings from various countries, and this has started a price war resulting in inferior and largely untested products.

Larger pipe sizes require a rather crude method whereby the ends of the pipes are melted and then hydraulically pressed together to form a joint. This method requires heavy and expensive equipment and is extremely time consuming. No method currently exists to join HDPE pipe larger than 110mm without having to Butt or Fusion weld.

PVC Piping

The drawback with joining PVC piping derives from the fact that, although methods exist to couple straight piping, these joints have to be anchored to prevent the pipes from slipping apart.

clampon plastic coupler 5Methods to join non-standard lengths of piping or to fit TR pieces and bends are very limited and require gluing on smaller pieces. On larger sizes, a metal neck ring is knocked over the pipe end to accommodate a rubber seal and a metal clamp. Standard lengths are dispatched from the pipe manufacturers with the metal rings already installed. These rings are pressed on hydraulically with substantial pressure. Should it therefore be necessary to shorten the pipe, it remains for a new ring to be pressed on, or in the absence of a press, to be hammered over the end of the pipe. This becomes extremely cumbersome, especially in underground conditions.

In recognition of this quandary, CLAMPON has designed its pipe coupling to largely alleviate the abovementioned problems. The CLAMPON coupler consists of a rubber seal joining the pipes, with two plastic or metal halves covering the rubber seal grip rings on the metal clamps to effectively grip on to the pipe. The coupler rated at 16 bar was SABS tested to failure and detached from the pipe at a hefty 50 bar on HDPE piping. Tests were also performed on PVC piping by two independent pipe manufacturers, and the same result was achieved. This over design was necessary to allow for factors such as surges or water hammer.

The couplers are available in sizes ranging from 63mm to 315mm, and CLAMPON has established a distribution network to service your needs.
